Two complete costumes are required.
Costumes are to be worn at all times (except when sleeping). This helps to get into the right spirit and frame of mind for the different re-enactments and activities from the Book of Mormon.
YES! Costumes are to be just below the knee in length. It is acceptable to cut a short slit up the sides for ease of movement. Please reinforce the slits as the Battle Scenes are quite active and these side slits can get easily torn.
Make costumes large enough to accomodate clothing worn underneath. You are encouraged to wear a t-shirt and modest shorts underneath the costume at all times. If the weather is cool, you may want to also wear jeans or sweatpants underneath. As the mornings and evenings can be cool, you may want to also wear a light jacket. If possible, try to wear all extra clothing and jackets underneath so you maintain the look of the costume.
For costumes, use earthtones, blues, greens, browns and natural colors that would have been used in Book of Mormon times. Fabrics that look woven or have a striped pattern are fine. PLEASE DO NOT use extra bright colors or neon, fabrics with large distracting print patterns or large flower patterns. (Always err on the conservative side and try to imagine plain and simple clothing worn by people at this time).
Footwear - you will need two pairs of good shoes or tennis shoes. One of these may be replaced with a sturdy pair of sandals with velcro or snaps that do not easily come off. NO FLIP FLOPS. The terrain is rough and you will be doing a fair amount of walking as well as participating in war re-enactments.
Have fun accessorizing your costume with trims, buttons, sashes, tie belts, contrasting materials. Etc. but alway keep in mind that you are trying to look like the people at the time of the Book of Mormon.
You can get great costume ideas from the Gospel Library Book of Mormon videos. You can also google "Moroni's Quest Costumes" and see what other stakes have done. Pinterest is also a great resource. You can find materials at thrift stores, use old tablecloths, paint drop cloths, placemats, leather belts, old curtains, etc. These can be simple, or as detailed as you want. Have fun!.
Ball caps, cowboy hats, toques, knit caps or other headgear are not historically accurate and won't be allowed.
